Third-party Observing Time
Introduction
A considerable amount of observing time on the EISCAT facilities is available for international competition by peer-review. Successful applications will receive free observing time, including initial data reduction (if using standard experimental arrangements) and copies of the raw and quick-look analysed data, but, in general, at least one experimenter will be expected to be present at EISCAT during operations
Submission address
EISCAT Headquarters (EISCAT Scientific Association, PO Box 164, Kiruna SE-981 23, Sweden) is the correct place to send applications for EISCAT observing time from outside the seven EISCAT Associate countries (Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom).
Peer-review process
Applications will be reviewed by the EISCAT Scientific Advisory Committee.
Deadlines
The EISCAT Scientific Advisory Committee reviews applications twice per year,
with application deadlines at the beginning of February and August. In order
to ensure that there is adequate time to complete the review and time
allocation procedures, applicants should normally submit requests before
1 February, for experiments to be run after 1 July the same year, and before
1 August for experiments to be run after 1 January the following year.
Application contents
- Name, affiliation and contact details (address, email, telephone, fax) of applicant(s),
- Title of project and summary of objectives,
- Estimate of EISCAT resources required,
- Description of other equipment to be used, and support requirements if this is to be installed at an EISCAT site,
- Description of how the experimenters propose to operate the experiment and process/export the resulting data,
- Scientific justification including details of previous work
(with references) and expected outcome.
