EISCAT Council decided during its last meeting in Berlin, on June 3-4, that EISCAT should take actions towards the preparatory phase of the ESFRI EISCAT_3D project. According to the Council's decision, Dr. Ian McCrea from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) started today (July 1) working as a part-time consultant on the development of the preparatory phase plan. The preparatory phase will be conducted during the years 2010-2012. EISCAT will be seeking EU FP7 funding for this phase of the project at the scale of 3-5 MEUR. The preparatory phase will produce the complete definition of a deployable system, including the resolution of all remaining design questions together with the clarification of the necessary political, logistical and financial issues. The preparatory phase project is planned to be conducted together with a range of interested parties in an open partnership, according to EU rules.
