An earthquake initially estimated at magnitude 6.2 and with epicentre about 159km southeast of Longyearbyen rocked the archipelago at about 0346 LT on Thursday 21 February.
The radar ran throughout the event and was very well placed to detect both pre- and post-earthquake effects.
The operator on duty was woken by violent shaking of the building, but continued the IPY operation as planned.
Some cracking has occured in the building which we will have checked professionally as soon as possible.
