Introduction

The European Union has provided funding under the 6th Framework Programme for Transnational Access to the EISCAT facilities.

Under this programme, a considerable amount of observing time on the EISCAT UHF and VHF facilities based at Tromso is available for international, peer-reviewed competition. Successful applicants will be awarded time on the radars, as well as funding to travel to EISCAT to make their observations, and assistance with observing programs and data analysis.

Awards under this programme are available to scientists from European Union, and related, countries other than Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Submissions

Applications should be sent to Dr. Ingemar Häggström, preferably by email to Ingemar.Haggstrom@eiscat.se, or by regular mail (EISCAT Scientific Association, P. O. Box 812, SE-981 28 Kiruna, Sweden) to arrive no later than on the submission deadline date.

Application contents

Applications should not exceed ten pages, including figures, and should concentrate on the scientific value of the proposed work. If necessary, potential applicants are encouraged to approach EISCAT for advice in the preparation of submissions but a typical applications should include:

• Title of project and summary of objectives,
• Name, affiliation and contact details (address, email, telephone, fax) of applicant(s),
• Scientific proposal including details of previous work (with references) and expected outcome,
• Estimate of EISCAT resources required,
• Description of other data sources or equipment to be used (if any), and support requirements, if this is to be installed at an EISCAT site,

Peer-review process

Applications will be reviewed by the EISCAT established Scientific Oversight Committee, who will enlist the help of external referees where necessary, and proposals will be awarded funding based on their scientific merit.

Applicants will be informed promptly of the outcome of the review process.
