Polaråret: romfysikere vil finne ut om solstormer rammer nord og sør likt eller ulikt

Det fjerde Internasjonale polaråret starter 1 mars. Forskere fra mer en 60 land starter da mer enn 200 felles prosjekter for å utforske Arktis og Antarktis. Gjennom IPY 2007 til 2009 vil vi utforske et vidt spekter av fysiske, biologiske og sosiologiske fenomener i de to polare områdene og hvordan dette påvirker våre liv. Det er et mål for IPY at så mange som mulig skal ha muligheten til å følge med i 'cutting-edge' vitenskap gjennom polaråret.

Norske romfysikere møttes i går ved Universitet i Bergen og startet polarårposjektet IPY-ICESTAR. Målet med møtet var å definere de mest brennende spørsmålene innen vår forskning. Planen er å utforske hvordan solstormer og romværet påvirker de to polare områdene samtidig ved a ta i bruk alle tilgjengelige data fra bakken og fra satellitter. Observasjoner av nord- og sør-lys vil gi oss viktig informasjon om denne vekselvirkningen. Kontinuerlig kjøring av den avanserte Svalbard radaren gjennom minst ett år er også et svært viktig element i denne forskningen. Data vil selvfølgelig gjøres tilgjengelig for resten av verdens forskere. Et tredje element er å forstå hvordan den midlere atmosfære reagerer når den utsettes for intenst bombardement av meget energirike partikler. Formidlingsgruppen inne IPY-ICESTAR har allerede startet planleggingen av en "romkoffert" som skal inneholde instrumenter for å følge solflekkaktivitet, kosmisk stråling fra rommet, strømmer i atmosfæren, nordlys o.s.v. Kofferten skal når den er ferdig tilbys for utlån til videregående skoler.

Antarctic and Arctic aurora - similar or different?

The fourth International Polar Year (IPY) will be launched in the beginning of March around the world. Scientists over 60 countries began joint science projects to explore the Arctic and the Antarctic. The International Council of Science, the World Meteorological Organization and national science institutes and Universities organize IPY, which covers over 200 science projects. Norwegian scientists are involved to over ten different projects. The goal of the IPY 2007 ^Ö 2009 is to explore the two Polar Regions by examining a wide range of physical, biological and social research topics. IPY provides everyone a possibility to get involved with the cutting edge science in real-time.

Norwegian space scientists, IPY-ICESTAR, met yesterday at the University of Bergen. The goal of the meeting was to define the most urgent IPY science questions for the space physics point of view. The plan is to explore the space weather phenomena around the Earth simultaneously at the two Polar Regions with the ground-based and space-borne instruments. The EISCAT radar in Svalbard will be run continuously 7 days a week 24 hours a day in an IPY-mode to study e.g. the impact of the particles into the middle atmosphere. The IPY-ICESTAR outreach group has already started to prepare a space research suitcase, which can be borrowed to any school in Norway. The suitcase includes the basic instrumentation needed to study the aurora region phenomena and they source region in the Sun.
