A memorandum of understanding on the 3rd ESR Antenna Project was signed between EISCAT and CRIRP, in Beijing on 15 July 2010. The MoU lays down the framework concerning the necessary actions, terms and responsibilities towards constructing a third antenna at EISCAT Svalbard Radar site, for combined use in incoherent scatter research by EISCAT and in the Chinese Moon Projects.

With the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, its ash cloud drifted over Tromsø on 15 April. EISCAT turned on its VHF radar and conducted high resolution measurements of the atmosphere from 50 km altitude.
